Set against the alpine landscape of Wānaka, this NZIA Award-winning Urban Bach by Hyndman Taylor is a carefully considered response to its surroundings. With views stretching across the lake, mountains, and neighbouring golf course, every design decision balances aesthetics, performance, and long-term durability.

Allied Concrete Wānaka was proud to support this project by supplying concrete across the foundation and internal flooring elements. The brief required a solution that would not only perform structurally, but also deliver a high-quality architectural finish.

Concrete that works as both structure and surface

A key feature of this Hyndman Taylor home is its polished concrete flooring, coloured using PeterFell’s Special Charcoal (PFL677). This finish creates a subtle connection to the natural tones of the surrounding environment, while pairing seamlessly with the home’s FlaxPod Colorsteel cladding and warm timber interiors.

From a supply perspective, consistency was critical. Achieving an even colour and finish across large floor areas requires tight control over mix design, batching, and delivery. Allied Concrete worked closely with the project team to ensure the concrete arrived on site with the right workability and uniformity to support a high-quality polished outcome.

Performance built in

Beyond aesthetics, the concrete plays a key role in the home’s performance. The use of a concrete slab provides thermal mass, helping regulate indoor temperatures by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it as temperatures drop. This contributes to year-round comfort while reducing reliance on artificial heating and cooling.

The solid concrete structure also enhances acoustic performance, limiting sound transfer between levels and supporting the relaxed, retreat-like atmosphere of the home.

Concrete was selected not only for its visual appeal, but for its durability and low maintenance over time. With colour integrated through the mix and a polished finish applied, the flooring delivers a consistent, hard-wearing surface well suited to a high-use holiday environment.
