Allied Concrete were chosen as the preferred concrete supplier to HEB Construction for the $23m Wharf Extension Project for Port Otago Limited (POL) at Port Chalmers, Dunedin.

The 135m extension to the existing 300m multipurpose wharf will provide additional cargo storage capacity, berthing, mooring and service facilities, improving operational capability to the port.

138 reinforced concrete piles at 32m deep each required approximately 30m3 of concrete were installed to support the suspended concrete wharf deck, with a depth of 750mm.

Over 5,000m3 of Marine Class C Spec 50MPa concrete has been supplied throughout the project, consisting of 11 deck and 11 pile pours with each fortnightly pour averaging 317m3. Targets in concrete strength achieved were 55MPa after 3 days, and 96MPa after 28 days with the Engineers Specification only requiring 50MPa after 28 days.

To deliver the required volumes within specified timeframes, Allied Concrete utilised resources from neighboring plants outside of Dunedin which included Mosgiel, Timaru, Balclutha, Gore, Invercargill, Alexandra and Wanaka as required, a testament to Allied’s operational capabilities to meet customer demand. All Allied staff undertook Port Otago security and site safety inductions as well as contractor inductions, with no recorded incidents to date.

Materials were pre-booked six months in advance of pour dates with programmed asset maintenance prior to each pour to ensure no disruption to concrete supply.

Solid working relationships with HEB Construction, Conslab and Bartlett Concrete (BCP) ensured concrete pours ran smoothly, were completed on time and on schedule over the seven month supply period.
