A landmark project for New Zealand’s southernmost city, Allied Concrete is proud to be the concrete supplier for Invercargill’s new CBD precinct. Stage one of this project opened in July 2022.

To make way for this transformative project that spans an entire city block, more than 40 buildings with varying degrees of damage and low earthquake ratings were demolished, with some building facades retained for heritage purposes. Once construction was able to begin, Allied Concrete has been busy on-site with many pours. First concrete was poured in July 2020, and more than 12,000m3 has been supplied. The largest pour was for the car park shear wall foundation at 386m3; the largest pour by the Invercargill plant in some years. Pouring at the site is almost a round-the-clock activity, with pouring happening before light and after dark.

Alongside the CBD development sits the HWR tower. This seven-storey building will be the new home of HWR’s head office staff, along with other tenants on the lower floors.  First concrete on this part of the build was poured in April 2021. To date, 1766m3 has been supplied with the largest pour being the 190m3 foundation. It’s expected the tower will be opened in early 2023.

The project is a joint venture between O’Donnell CBD Ltd, the Invercargill City Council and the Provincial Growth Fund. Fearing Invercargill could fall into decline with a lack of investment in the city’s infrastructure, HWR directors Scott and Joc O’Donnell felt they were in a position to play a part in giving back the Invercargill CBD its heart, and proposed the redevelopment project.
