Honorary Life Membership for Dr James Mackechnie

Allied Concrete is proud to congratulate Dr James Mackechnie, who has been awarded Honorary Life Membership of Concrete NZ – the organisation’s highest level of individual recognition.

First introduced in 2021, Honorary Life Membership recognises individuals whose contribution to the concrete industry is both eminent and enduring. Recipients demonstrate sustained leadership, technical expertise, and industry mana, reflecting a standard set exceptionally high.

A career of impact and leadership

Following his professional career in South Africa, where he also served as a Research Officer at the University of Cape Town, James’ move into New Zealand academia established his reputation as both a teacher and a researcher of international standing.

Over more than three decades, James has combined scholarship, technical expertise, and leadership across academia, industry, and professional service. As a Senior Lecturer and CCANZ Fellow at the University of Canterbury, he educated a generation of engineers while producing research that continues to shape standards, specifications, and durability practice.

In commercial practice, James has applied rigour and innovation to materials and mix development, with his research into supplementary cementitious materials and engineered sands advancing sustainability and performance in modern concrete production. His impact in this space was recognised with the Sandy Cormack Prize for his work on sand quality in low-carbon concrete. His leadership includes chairing the Standards Committee responsible for the 2021 revision of NZS 3104 – Concrete Production, as well as contributions across the ready mixed, precast, and cement sectors.

James has also served as President of the New Zealand Concrete Society, Education, Training and Research Manager for Concrete NZ, and continues to act as a mentor and advisor to many across the industry. His vision, generosity, and integrity have left a strong and enduring imprint on colleagues and the wider profession.

Concrete NZ described Dr Mackechnie’s Honorary Life Membership as a recognition of his sustained leadership, influence, and undeniable legacy.

A valued member of Allied Concrete

James first joined Allied Concrete in May 2008 as Technical Manager and remained with the company until January 2018. After a few years away, he returned in January 2022, continuing to provide technical leadership, guidance, and innovation across the business. Over the years, James has played an integral role in advancing product development, quality assurance, and concrete technology within Allied Concrete, while also contributing to industry-wide improvements in standards and performance.

His influence extends beyond the business. One team member summed up James’s reputation perfectly, saying:

“James is one of the most respected concrete gurus in New Zealand. I had someone in my previous company tell me that the reason they used Allied Concrete was because of James – no one knows concrete like James.”

His work has shaped national practices in durability, sustainability, and design innovation, leaving a lasting impact across both Allied Concrete and the broader sector.
