Low Carbon Concrete

How can I ensure my project maximises sustainability benefits?

Consider the construction sequence, the overall project timeline, and where program requirements or specific finish types are necessary.

For example, foundations and substructures can typically have lower carbon footprints for their respective grade, whereas elements requiring a quick formwork turnaround e.g., precast elements, are more sensitive to carbon optimisation.

Does low-carbon concrete take longer to cure?

Yes and no. The curing time depends on several factors, with raw material availability being a key one.

In the South Island, achieving lower-carbon outcomes often requires cement substitutions. Depending on the time of year, these substitutions may slightly impact the initial setting time. In the North Island, this is less likely due to the availability of low-carbon cements.

Our Plant Engineers can optimise curing times based on your specific construction circumstances.

Can low-carbon concrete be used for all types of construction?

Yes, it can. We first assess the structural application and program performance before optimising the carbon footprint of your project. Allied Concrete provides expert guidance to ensure the best fit for each project.

Does low-carbon concrete contribute to green building certifications?

Yes, using low-carbon concrete can help projects achieve Green Star, Homestar, and LEED certification points due to reduced embodied carbon.

How much CO₂ reduction can be achieved with low-carbon concrete?

Depending on the mix, CO₂ reductions of 20-80% can be achieved compared to standard concrete.

How does low-carbon concrete compare to traditional concrete in performance?

Properly designed low-carbon mixes offer comparable strength, durability, and workability to traditional concrete while reducing environmental impact.

What is low-carbon concrete?

Low-carbon concrete is designed to reduce carbon emissions by incorporating various methods, including the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), lower-carbon cement made in New Zealand, sustainable aggregate sourcing, and other initiatives.

Ready Products

Can I apply multiple coats of Ready Concrete Sealer?

Yes, applying multiple coats of Ready sealer can enhance the protection and appearance of your concrete surface. Follow the product instructions for recommended drying times between coats to ensure optimal performance.

What are the benefits of using Ready Thinners?

Ready Thinners are used to adjust the viscosity of sealers and other concrete treatments for easier application. These concrete thinners allow for smooth and even coverage, helping to achieve a professional finish.

What is the best acid wash for concrete in New Zealand?

We stand behind Ready Acid Wash as the best concrete acid wash in New Zealand. Its concentrated formula effectively removes stubborn stains, efflorescence and salts, preparing concrete surfaces for optimal sealer adhesion.

How do I apply Ready concrete sealers?

Applying Ready concrete sealers is straightforward. Here are the detailed steps:

  1. Clean the concrete surface thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil or debris. Use a pressure washer for best results, and allow the surface to dry completely.
  2. If using the sealer on new concrete, treat the surface with Ready Acid Wash, a popular concrete acid wash in New Zealand, to remove latence and salts. Follow the detailed instructions for applying acid wash.
  3. Stir the sealer well before use to ensure an even consistency.
  4. Use a roller or sprayer to apply the sealer evenly across the concrete surface. Apply in thin, even coats to avoid pooling and ensure thorough coverage.
  5. Allow the first coat to dry completely, typically for 24 hours. Avoid foot traffic on the surface during this time.
  6. Apply a second coat if necessary, following the same method. Allow it to dry completely.
  7. Let the concrete sealer cure fully before exposing the surface to heavy traffic or harsh weather conditions. This can take up to 72 hours.

By following these steps, you will achieve a durable and long-lasting finish on your concrete surfaces.

Can I use Ready Products on old concrete?

Yes, Ready Products can be used on both new and old concrete surfaces. For old concrete, keep the surface clean and free of contaminants before applying the concrete sealer, acid wash or thinner to achieve the best results.

Decorative Concrete

What is decorative concrete, and what are the benefits?

Decorative concrete is a type of concrete enhanced through various techniques to provide aesthetic appeal along with traditional functionality. Some of its benefits include:
Aesthetic versatility — Decorative concrete can mimic other materials like brick, natural stone or even wood, providing countless design options.
Durability — Like standard concrete, decorative variants are incredibly durable and suitable for high-traffic areas.
Low maintenance — Unlike natural wood or stone, decorative concrete requires minimal upkeep.
Cost-effectiveness — It is often more affordable than other paving or flooring options, especially for larger areas.
Customisation — Decorative concrete can be tailored to fit specific design needs and personal preferences.

How much does decorative concrete cost?

The cost of decorative concrete depends on several factors, such as the complexity of the design, the types and quality of materials used and the scale of the project. Basic staining or simple stamping patterns are generally more affordable, while intricate designs and advanced textural effects may cost more.
For specific pricing aligned with your project’s specifications, request a quote from us directly.

How long does decorative concrete last, and how do I maintain it?

Typically, our decorative concrete solutions can last anywhere from 25 to 30 years or more. To ensure the longevity of your decorative concrete, make sure to do the following:
Regular cleaning — Sweep and wash the surface regularly to prevent dirt accumulation.
Apply a sealer — To protect the surface against moisture, stains and wear, apply a sealer every few years. This is especially important for exterior concrete.
Avoid harsh chemicals — Use gentle cleaning products specifically designed for use on decorative concrete to avoid damaging the surface.
