Allied Concrete is proud to unveil the latest chapter in our sustainability journey, our second dual-fuel hydrogen concrete truck, now based in Invercargill, has officially hit the road with a powerful new look.
This truck has been fitted with world-first technology that blends hydrogen fuel with diesel, reducing transport emissions by over 30%. The retrofitted system was developed by CH2NGE Fuel Technologies. It’s a practical and scalable step toward a lower-carbon future, delivering full load capacity, range, and performance without compromise.
The truck’s fresh new branding – “Driving Change. Driving Hydrogen.” – reflects both our commitment to cleaner construction and the momentum we’re building across the country.
This system works by retrofitting hydrogen technology to an existing diesel engine. During operation, hydrogen is injected in the intake stroke and co-combusts with diesel to power the vehicle. An advanced control system ensures consistent energy output and fuel flexibility, seamlessly switching between hydrogen and diesel modes as needed.
A scalable solution for a carbon-conscious industry
Concrete transport is a major contributor to the industry’s emissions profile, with an estimated 22 million litres of diesel used annually in New Zealand alone for concrete delivery. Allied Concrete’s dual-fuel hydrogen trucks offer a real-world, scalable alternative, with pilot results showing:
Over 30% reduction in diesel usage
Estimated 6.6 million litres of diesel saved per year (if adopted industry-wide)
CO₂ savings of up to 17,688 tonnes annually, equivalent to:
Planting 290,000 trees
Removing 3,800 cars from NZ roads each year
Unlike electric alternatives, the hydrogen system allows for:
Full bowl capacity
No route limitations
Fast refuelling times
Retrofitting to existing fleet vehicles, extending their life and reducing capital waste
Leading by example in the South Island
The Invercargill-based truck follows the successful rollout of our first hydrogen-diesel truck in Auckland, reinforcing Allied Concrete’s commitment to reducing emissions across both urban and regional operations.
We’re proud to showcase this new vehicle, not just for its bold new look, but for what it represents: a smarter, cleaner future for concrete logistics.
