Sustainable Excellence in New Zealand's First Passive House

2023 DBbld 014

We're thrilled to share how concrete played a crucial role in achieving the exceptional quality of New Zealand's first Passive House - The Dunlop Hub office building in Wanaka.

Designed with reduced environmental impact and optimized internal conditions for minimal energy usage in heating and cooling, this building sets a new standard for sustainable construction. By incorporating an industrial by-product as a cement replacement, we successfully reduced the embodied carbon content by approximately 13%, equivalent to 5.5 - 6 tonnes in the slab, without compromising strength or durability.

The overall result of the build is a remarkable achievement not only demonstrating the commitment to energy efficiency but also aided securing this prestigious certification. It is believed to be the only office building outside of France to be awarded the internationally recognised Passive House Plus certification, making it a true standout in the industry.
